What is Stevia?
Stevia is a genus containing nearly 240 species of shrubs and herbs belonging to the sunflower family. It is found in subtropical and tropical
South America and also in Central America. Stevia, also known as sweet leaf and sugar leaf, is grown for its sweet leaves. It is often used as a
substitute for sugar. Its taste has a longer duration than that of sugar. Some of its extracts, however, have a bitter aftertaste, if used in
high concentration.
With demand for low carbohydrate, low sugar food alternatives rising by the day, stevia has attracted a lot of attention. Moreover, medical
research has also hinted at possible benefits of stevia in treating high blood pressure and obesity. It has become a convenient choice for a
natural sweetener to all those on a carbohydrate controlled diet. This is attributed to the fact that stevia has minimal effect on blood glucose.
United States had banned stevia in the early 1990s unless labeled as a supplement. However, it is widely used in Japan and in the recent times it
is being available as a dietary supplement in Canada.
Trade Name of stevia extract
A zero-calorie sweetener, containing chiefly steviol glycoside rebaudioside A (reb-A), is extracted from stevia. The trade name of the
sweetener is Rebiana. The consumer brand for Rebiana is Truvia which is a new product.
